This is a basic buttercream recipe. I will use this basic recipe, but I really like to use it base and modify it.
1 c. crisco vegetable shortening – regular or butter. (try not to substitute)
1 t. flavoring (vanilla or almond or butter or whatever flavor you like)
2 Tblsp. milk or water
1 lb power sugar – sifter (1 lb is about 4 cups)
1 Tblsp. meringue powder
Cream the crisco, flavoring and milk.
Add the dry ingredients.
Beat until smooth.
This will make a “stiff” consistency frosting. If you need a softer frosting – add milk or water a 1/2 Tblsp at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.
If you would like to make Chocolate Buttercream, add about 1/2 c. of cocoa. Increase you liquid by about 2 Tblsp. Continue to add liquid 1/2 Tblsp at a time to reach desired consistency. I will also add cooled chocolate ganache to this recipe to get a better tasting chocolate frosting.
